About

As you can see, another major interest for me is flying radio controlled helicopters! I enjoy both the similarities and contrasts with music-making: hours of practice (if you have ever tried hovering a helicopter, you will know how hard even this basic skill is to acquire!), the companionship of fellow-flyers, plus maintenance of the instrument. One difference is that no-one has yet produced a computer programme that simulates violin practice, whereas at least I can hone my helicopter skills virtually, when the weather is inclement!

Teaching also enriches my life: both working with students at the Royal Northern College of Music and helping younger and older folk to develop their musical lives. This can include playing games without the instrument that develop balance, speed up reflexes and support relaxation. They are also great fun!

Finally, my family - wife, Clare McFarlane, (whom I have known since the age of 13) and sons Nicholas and Christopher ensure that, should I find that I have time on my hands, it is easily filled.
